Has anybody decided which skate 'races', events or marathons they are going to orient their training towards in 2009? Some that come to mind:
Texas Roadrash, 24 Hr Roller Montreal, Napa Valley Marathon, Chicagoland Inline Marathon, Athens to Atlanta Roadskate, MS BB&T Tour to Tanglewood, NYC Marathon, NYC 100k, St. Paul Inline Marathon, Northshore...etc. Actually there are loads to pick from if you have the time and money for traveling and event fees.

Picking on the Germans again. They are doing a heck of a lot in Germany to promote skating. Thanks to Peter Doucet's http://www.speedskateworld.com/ for pointing me over to the latest WIC photos. The 30k speed race took place this past weekend at my old hang-out: Mainz, Germany.
Whilst snooping around the personal finance and get-out-of-debt blogs, I tapped into the personal weight-loss blogs. In following the ADHD links to the maze of other such webpages, I found some funny blog titles, like "Over 40, in debt and overweight". Yes, in 2007 there are countlesspeople still struggling in vain to lose excess weight. They all seem to believe that food deprivation and other people's idea of exercise are the only solutions. Will this hopelessly cruel and debilitating cycle ever end?
If your old or present boots feel as comfy as a memory-foam mattress, would you still (or have you ever) shell(ed) out $500+ for a new pair, because you like how they look?
It's nice to see the honors still coming for local skater guy Joey Cheek, and that his good works continue. Looks like this award was received on June 4 in Tulsa, OK, and was presented by the Rotary Club of Tulsa in memory of the legendary Oklahoma State basketball coach Henry P. Iba.
This is a bike ride that has welcomed skaters for the past few years. Some of the Atlanta Peachtree Roadrollers do this event each year and always give it great reviews. Here's what I have learned from the website, www.cartersvillecentury.org:
Hey can any of you answer a question for me? Is it true that I would burn more calories in one hour of running than, say, one hour of cycling, if my heart rate is the same for both? If so, can you explain why?
Here's a book to collect what we remember about Inline Speed Skating drills from Eddy Matzger workshops and other places (Barry Publow workshops, elsewhere). Please contribute! Feel free to ask questions.

Derek Parra was among the early adopters switching from inline to ice, and now he seems ready to switch to coaching and recruiting to help the USA continue its improvements in speedskating. As part of a Wheels on Ice initiative, Parra recently hosted a group of inliners, including Heather Lynn Richardson of High Point NC and Chad Horne of nearby Danville VA.
I feel like this really only half-counts as an A2A journal, because I only did the 38 miles! At the time I did not deem myself worthy of a write-up, believing I didn't really count compared with people like Eddy, Barrie, Cindy S., Patricia F., and other really proficient skaters. So this is a collection of memories, and comments I posted to the 1999 Team in Training's mailing list.

(Posted this on my website a long time ago... Reposting here for Blake's A2A history project.)
On Sunday, October 7th, I skated 86 miles from Athens, GA to Atlanta, GA. This was the culmination of much training and the accomplishment of a major goal I set for myself over a year ago. It's also pretty cool that, having just turned 30, I'm probably in the best shape of my life.

Over on InlineNC there was a question from one of our team members about ankle pain with Powerslide R4 boots. Here are some links in case you're a member of InlineNC. I won't quote from others, but will start a discussion here so it's Googable:
Any skaters who find themselves amongst the lonely mansions and shiny metal boxes of Gwinnett County, GA, might want to check out Tribble Mill Park as a little piece of heaven plus hills.
With all our various posts to this site about calories, intake & output & weight loss, I couldn't remember if anybody had posted about the varying supposed number of calories burned while inline skating. A basic internet search yields many different claims as to how many calories an inline skater burns. Of course the main factor is one's weight, then the duration of the skate. But I think most claims out there, typically the ones listed as 'rollerblading' in a drop-down box along with Tae Kwon Do, Aerobics and Jogging, are misleading because it doesn't allow for intensity. Factoring in Heart Rate would help here, since someone with either excellent technique and/or a high level of fitness could go 12mph on hills barely raising their heart rate.
Some time ago, Skart asked on the Skweight Management thread:
"Another question. Did anybody try flat Coke or Pepsi as an energy drink in their camelbaks? I can just see deluted Coke and Elite water making a pretty good combination"
Which do you think works best as the single publicized name for the alliance website? The North Carolina Active Transportation Alliance website is in the planning stages. This page lets you vote on domain names and comment on features you might like on the site in advance. Results are tallied by Borda Count, sometimes called "a consensus-based electoral system" where each choice gets a point for every choice ranked below it. Thus, with 9 choices, a 1st place vote gets 8 points. Please click the title for more info and to rank....
Note that if you only vote on the names you really like and leave the rest unranked, you boost those names you prefer, as with no rank at all a name gets no points. The idea is to find the name most wish to promote, and let the rest fall away. Thus, this is a reasonable practice, especially if all are aware of the technique noted here.
You may cancel and revote.
Please vote only once. Although it is possible to game the system by voting anonymously from various IP addresses, we hope you'll vote just once. The way to ensure one vote per person is to require login, but that would also ensure a lower vote participation and one biased toward people willing to sign up for a website in general, and specifically a webiste about skating and cycling for charity.
