Miami Great Esskate 2007 Miami Beach South Beach FL

2007.02.09 6:00 pm
2007.02.11 6:00 pm
US/Eastern
Join hundreds of inline skaters from around the USA to burn up the streets of South Beach, Miami Beach, Miami and more. Times approximate. More details to come. This one was modeled on the Philly Freedom Skate and they've done it right with full police support and a charity focus for great safe fun in a busy place. Do this at least once before you say you're not interested! You may change your mind... Blake

Well done, Great Esskate!
Exciting! On the Great Esskate website www.skatemiami.com, it states: "We are happy to announce that the second weekend of February is now officially known as the Great EsSKATE Weekend here in Miami Beach, FL."
It goes on to say they've earned their own weekend on the city's calendar of events. Way to go! This event seems to continue to be one that keeps hundreds of skaters coming back. I guess it's the combination of sun, heat and flat land in an otherwise dark, cold and flabby month.
Speaking for myself, I'm looking forward to it already! It's only been 4 weeks since A2A and warm, bright weather, but I'm hankering after sunny skates with friends already.
Sun AND flat land???!!

No racing at all at the Great EsSkate. Last year it was the weekend of the huge snowstorm in the Northeast, which translated in Miami to a brisk and windy 50's. The day before that we all got sunburned in 80 deg heat, which worked out fine as that was the beach picnic day. Most times I've done this event it's been 70's, sunny and breezy.
I too have an almost 12 year old boy but I have never taken him to any events to skate with me, as much as I would love to. The most we've done together skate-wise is an hour here and there in the park with him on his bike. For Miami, Philly, DC and BAR events, I enjoy the staying-up-late jaunts around town and think I would worry about my son either being out late or not being ok in the hotel room. I wouldn't do it unless I could bring a babysitter with me but I can't afford that anyway!
I don't think there's really any grossly inappropriate behavior that happens at the Great EsSkate (that I know of, or at least outside of the hotel rooms!), it's just flabby February skaters (OK speaking for myself, I know!) wanting to get out, live and breathe with other skaters in some warm, bright weather.
I hope you can go! It's worth it.
